Teeth whitening

Like summer light on the water, whitening brightens what’s already there, so your smile still looks like yours.

Professional whitening lightens stains from coffee, tea, red wine and time. We check your teeth first, then help you choose a safe approach that suits your smile.

Over the years, teeth pick up stains and naturally darken a little. Whitening uses a peroxide gel to break up those stains and lighten the colour of the tooth. Results vary from person to person. Yellow tones often lighten well, while grey tones can be harder to change.

Whitening only works on natural teeth. Fillings, crowns and veneers stay the same colour, so we’ll talk about how that might affect your smile. We also check for cavities and gum problems first, since those should be treated before you whiten.

How it works

  1. 01

    A check-up first

We make sure your teeth and gums are healthy and talk about what you’d like to change.

  2. 02

    Recording your shade

We note your starting shade so you can see your progress.

  3. 03

    Your whitening plan

We explain how the gel is used, how long to use it and what to expect, based on your teeth and your goals.

  4. 04

    Whitening

The gel is applied in a thin, even layer. Trays fitted to your teeth help keep it where it belongs and away from your gums.

  5. 05

    Checking in

We check your results and your comfort, and adjust the plan if your teeth feel sensitive.

Afterwards

Some people notice tooth sensitivity or mild gum irritation while whitening. It usually fades within a day or two of stopping. A toothpaste for sensitive teeth can help.

Whitening isn’t permanent. To keep your results longer, rinse with water after coffee, tea or red wine, avoid smoking and keep up with regular cleanings. Occasional touch-ups can refresh your colour.

Questions people ask

Is whitening safe for my teeth?

Yes, when it’s done under a dentist’s guidance and used as directed. Whitening isn’t recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for young children.

Does whitening hurt?

It shouldn’t hurt. Some people feel temporary sensitivity or a tingle in their teeth. Tell us if you do, and we can change how often or how long you whiten.

How white will my teeth get?

Every smile responds differently, so we can’t promise a specific shade. After we see your teeth, we’ll give you an honest idea of what to expect.

Is whitening covered by insurance?

Whitening is cosmetic, so many plans don’t cover it. We’ll give you a written estimate before treatment and can send a pre-determination to your insurer if you’d like to check.
