Porcelain veneers

Thin as birch bark and just as natural, a porcelain veneer lets your smile catch the light.

A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain bonded to the front of a tooth. Veneers can change the colour, shape or length of teeth, and close small gaps.

Veneers can help with teeth that are stained and don’t respond to whitening, teeth that are chipped or worn, and teeth that are slightly uneven. Porcelain resists staining and reflects light much like natural enamel.

To make room for a veneer, a thin layer of enamel is usually removed from the front of the tooth. This can’t be undone, so we take time to plan with you. We’ll make sure veneers suit your teeth and your goals, and we’ll talk about other options, like whitening or bonding.

How it works

  1. 01

    Planning your smile

We examine your teeth, talk about what you’d like to change, and take photos and impressions to plan the result with you.

  2. 02

    Preparing the teeth

With the area numbed thoroughly, we gently remove a thin layer of enamel from the front of each tooth.

  3. 03

    Temporaries

We take impressions and may place temporary veneers while your porcelain veneers are custom-made.

  4. 04

    Bonding

We check the fit and shade with you, then bond each veneer firmly to its tooth and polish the edges.

Afterwards

Your teeth may be a little sensitive for a few days, and your veneers will feel new at first. Your tongue adjusts quickly. Care for them like natural teeth: brush, floss and keep up with check-ups. Avoid biting on hard things like ice, pens or fingernails, and wear a night guard if you grind. Veneers can chip, and they will need replacing at some point.

Questions people ask

Do veneers hurt?

We numb the area thoroughly before preparing your teeth. Some people feel mild sensitivity or gum tenderness for a few days afterwards.

How long do porcelain veneers last?

With good care, porcelain veneers can last many years. Grinding, chewing hard objects and gum problems can shorten their life.

Can veneers be whitened later?

No. Porcelain doesn’t change colour with whitening. If you’d like whiter teeth, whiten first, before your veneers are made, so we can match them to your new shade.

Are veneers covered by insurance?

Veneers are usually considered cosmetic, so many plans don’t cover them. We’ll give you a written estimate before treatment and can send a pre-determination to your insurer to check.
