Our story

Deep roots, bright smiles

A family practice that grew up with Huntsville, and is now growing into its next chapter, in the same rooms above Main Street.

In 2000, Dr. Doug Litchfield began caring for Huntsville families from a bright second-floor office on Main Street. A 1987 graduate of the University of Western Ontario, he built the kind of practice small towns are lucky to have: thorough, friendly and steady. Patients came for a cleaning and stayed for decades. Children who sat in his chair for their first check-up brought their own kids years later.

Now the practice is beginning a new chapter as Huntsville Smiles Dentistry. A new dentist is joining, and Dr. Litchfield is staying on through the transition, working side by side so the handover happens gradually and every patient is introduced in person. When he does step back, it will be into a well-earned retirement, and the practice he built will carry on in the same rooms.

We chose a name that belongs to the town, because the practice always has. The goodwill Dr. Litchfield earned over more than 25 years isn’t ours to take for granted. It’s ours to keep earning, one appointment at a time.

Founding dentist, through the transition

Dr. Doug Litchfield

Dr. Litchfield graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1987 and has cared for Huntsville families since 2000. He has always kept up with new ways of doing things, while holding on to the old-fashioned parts that matter: listening, explaining and treating people like neighbours. Away from the office he has long loved skiing, soccer and the outdoors, which in Muskoka is hardly a surprise.

The team

Behind every visit is a small team of hygienists, assistants and front-desk staff who look after your appointments, your insurance questions and your comfort. Introductions are coming soon.

How we practise

Four things we hold on to

  1. 01

    Prevention first

The kindest treatment is the one you never need. We put our time into cleanings, early checks and showing you what works at home.

  2. 02

    Plain language

We show you what we see, explain it without jargon and write down your options, including the option to wait.

  3. 03

    Unhurried

Appointments are booked with room to breathe, so there’s time for questions and nobody feels rushed out of the chair.

  4. 04

    Honest about cost

You’ll get a written estimate before treatment, and we can send it to your insurer first so there are no surprises.

The office & access

A lodge above Main Street

Timber posts, a stone fireplace and windows over downtown. If you’ve been before, you know the feeling. If you haven’t, it’s a calmer room than most people expect from a dental office.
