Porcelain crowns
A crown, sometimes called a cap, covers a whole tooth to protect and strengthen it. Ours are made of porcelain, shaped and shaded to look like a natural tooth.

When a tooth is badly worn, cracked or has a large filling, there may not be enough strong tooth left to hold another filling. A crown fits over the tooth like a helmet. It holds the tooth together and lets you chew with confidence again.
Crowns are also used to protect a tooth after root canal treatment, to cover a dental implant or to anchor a bridge. Each one is custom-made to fit your bite.
How it works
- 01
Planning
We examine the tooth, take x-rays and talk about whether a crown is the right choice for you.
- 02
Preparing the tooth
After numbing the area thoroughly, we gently reshape the tooth so the crown can fit over it.
- 03
Impressions and shade
We take an impression of your teeth and choose a shade that matches your smile.
- 04
A temporary crown
You wear a temporary crown to protect the tooth while your porcelain crown is being made.
- 05
Fitting your crown
At your second visit, we check the fit, colour and bite, then cement the crown in place.
Afterwards
Your new crown may feel a little different at first. Your tongue will get used to it within a few days. Some sensitivity to cold is normal for a week or two. Brush and floss around it like a natural tooth, because the edge where the crown meets the tooth can still get a cavity. If you grind your teeth, a night guard can help protect your crown.
Questions people ask
Does getting a crown hurt?
We numb the area thoroughly, so you should feel pressure but not pain. The tooth and gum may be a little sore for a few days after each visit.
What if my temporary crown comes off?
Keep it somewhere safe and call us. We’ll put it back on. Until then, chew on the other side and avoid sticky foods.
How long does a crown last?
With good care, a crown can last many years. Daily brushing and flossing, regular check-ups and protecting it from grinding all help.
Is a crown covered by insurance?
Coverage depends on your plan, and many plans cover part of the cost. We’ll give you a written estimate before treatment and can send a pre-determination to your insurer first.
